Rain Farther South

June 2nd, 2010 Dylan No comments

Thunderstorms that passed on through parts of Lower Michigan this morning deposited some much needed rainfall (mostly south of M-72 and M-55) with much lighter amounts, if any, to the north.

We even had pea to marble sized hail in Cadillac around 445a.m. with some gusty winds.

For this afternoon, we are looking at partly sunny skies north and cloudy skies south with a chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms. Northern areas have a slight chance for a shower redeveloping. Highs will be in the upper 60′s to lower 70′s. Winds will be N 5-15mph.

A few showers are possible tonight especially in the L.P. otherwise mostly cloudy skies are expected. Lows will be in the 40′s and lower 50′s. Winds N/NE 3-6mph.

Mixes skies are on tap for Thursday with highs in theupper 60′s and lower 70′s north and lower/middle 70′s south. Winds will be variable 5-10mph.

Another system takes aim on the region Friday p.m. and night. This will give us another round of showers and thunderstorms. Highs will be in the upper 60′s to lower 70′s north and lower to middle 70′s south.

The weekend is looking to be a 50-50 weekend with Saturday *now looking dry but another system could be heading our way for Sunday.

Big Changes Coming To Dylan’s Weather

May 29th, 2010 Dylan No comments

Hey guys,

I just wanted to keep all of you updated on the changes coming to Dylan’s Weather.

A lot has happened over the last few months, even though I can not tell you a whole lot.

I will start to post videos on the website over the next few months as things come together but trust me, big things are coming.

Now i am sad to report that in a few months we will probably be taking most of our website down. I think that we will keep the blog up as just an update to were you can watch me. But it does look like we will be combining websites into one.

Hope to give you guys many more updates in a few weeks.

Warm Weather Breaks Records

May 25th, 2010 Dylan No comments

We have a couple more days of very warm (or hot, for some of you) and humid conditions before it gets more comfortable by the end of the week.. So that means a couple more days of potentially record breaking heat.

Records that are in jeopardy:

City…………………….Today………..Wed

Sault Ste. Marie……….85…………..82

Gaylord…………………88…………..85

Traverse City………….87…………..89

Big Rapids……………..88…………..88

——-

Some of the warmest temperatures yesterday:

Indian River…………96
Boyne City………….94
Baldwin………………94
Wellston……………..93
Traverse City………93 (record)
Bellaire………………93 (record)
Pellston………………92 (record)
Cadillac………………91 (record)
Fremont……………..90
Gaylord………………89 (ties record)
Big Rapids…………..88
Houghton Lake……..87
Mt. Pleasant…………86

And on an interesting side note, Indian River (and much of Northern Michigan) was warmer than some of the usual “hot spots” in the U.S.

Yesterday, Orlando only got up to 89 degrees. Honolulu reached 86 degrees. And Phoenix, only got up to 80 degrees. So, Indian River was 16 degrees warmer than Phoenix!

——-

Another hot and humid day is on tap for us with highs into the 80′s and lower to middle 90′s. Just like yesterday, we saw some lake breezes kick in during the afternoon hours dropping the temperatures several degrees in a matter of an hour or two. Yesterday, Traverse City was around 91 degrees mid-p.m. but dropped to the lower 70′s by 5p.m. as the bay breezes kicked in! Winds, otherwise, will be SE 7-15mph outside of the lake breezes.

Also, those lake breezes will help develop some cloudiness like it did yesterday, so we are looking at a mainly partly cloudy afternoon for most.

Tonight, winds will go light and we will see more fog and haze. Lows will be in the 50′s and lower/middle 60′s.

The clouds will increase late Wednesday, otherwise another hot and muggy day is in store. Highs will be in the 80′s with some lower 90′s.

A weakening cold front will move on through the region late Wednesday night and Thursday giving us a small chance for a few showers and thunderstorms. The threat decreases from NW to SE Thursday p.m.
Highs on Thursday will be in the lower to middle 70′s north and upper 70′s to lower 80′s south.

Friday-Sunday is looking dry. Friday is looking very comfortable with highs in the upper 60′s to lower 70′s north and 70′s south.

It does look like we could warm up again for Saturday and Sunday with some sunshine. Highs Saturday will be in the 70′s to even some lower 80′s and several degrees warmer Sunday.

Memorial Day Monday is looking partly cloudy with a small shower/thundershower threat in the a.m. as a cold front is forecasted to move on through the region.

Big Storm For Saturday.

May 7th, 2010 Dylan No comments

** Major Spring Storm delivers heavy rain and snow for much of Northern Michigan – Several inches are expected North of M-55 into the UP. Strong winds create more problems Saturday **

Rain continues overnight and will be heavy at times in our Northern areas. The entire area stays damp as the system continues moving through the Ohio Valley. The rain changes over to snow tonight with snow adding up for many areas.

Here are the snowy details: North of M-55 into the Eastern U.P. 1-3″ are possible with another inch or 2 possible tomorrow morning. The higher elevations can expect the highest accumulations with perhaps up to 5″ + in some areas. Those of you near the Great Lakes plan on seeing less than 1″. South of M-55 only a mix of snow and rain is expected so less than 1″ is forecast.

Temperatures drop into the 30′s tonight as winds start picking up. The mercury warms into the low to middle 40′s tomorrow, however winds are a bigger problem. Strong gusty winds of 15-30 mph are forecast with higher gusts. The combination of snow and wind means tree limbs and power lines may come down causing power outages. Wind chills of 25-35 degrees are expected through the day. Overall get ready for very raw, winter-like day.

Conditions improve Saturday night as the storm moves away. But the cold air will be in place and so frost/freeze conditions are going to be a problem. High pressure builds in for Mother’s Day setting the stage for a lot of sunshine with highs of 48 to 55 degrees.

After another frosty morning, sunshine continues Monday with warming temperatures. Another storm is then expected Tuesday but instead of snow you will see plenty of rain with highs in the 50′s.

Scattered Thunderstorms All Week

May 2nd, 2010 Dylan No comments

The first work-week of May is looking showery with a chance for thunderstorms. Tuesday *is looking dry, but all other days we do have a chance for a few showers (and thunderstorms).

With recent rain across mostly the Lower Peninsula this weekend (and high humidity levels), fire danger has dropped to ‘Low to Moderate’. Burn permits are being issued in many counties. Please check out http://www.dnr.state.mi.us/burnpermits/ for current information.

A few showers are possible into Monday a.m. with lower in the 40′s. Winds will be SW 6-13mph.

Variably cloudy skies are expected for Monday with a few showers and thunderstorms as a cold front moves on through. Highs will be well into the 60′s and lower 70′s with the coolest temperatuers near Lake Michigan with W/SW winds 10-20mph. Some storms could be heavy in the afternoon/early evening especially in the Lower Peninsula.

Tuesday is looking dry with highs in the 50′s and lower 60′s but cooler near Lake Michigan once again.

Scattered showers and a few thunderstorms are possible for Wednesday as yet another cold front moves on through. Highs will be in the upper 50′s to lower/middle 60′s.

Thursday and Friday are looking similar with mostly cloudy skies and highs in the middle 50′s north and upper 50′s/lower 60′s south on Thursday and cooler for Friday. There is a chance for showers both days.

Showers remain in the forecast Saturday with Mother’s Day Sunday possibly seeing a few snow flakes (yes, snow flakes) *early in the morning (more like Saturday night). It will be cooler than normal for the weekend.

Warming Up This Week!

April 13th, 2010 Dylan No comments

*Fire Danger generally HIGH across the region with some burning still allowed. Check out this website for complete burning information:

http://www.dnr.state.mi.us/burnpermits/

————————————————–
A warm front across the SW Great Lakes area will give us some extra cloudiness in parts of the Lower Peninsula along with a slight shower chance mainly for Mason, Oceana and Newaygo counties. Farther north, we are looking at some clearing with some sunshine. Highs will be in the 50′s and lower 60′s. Winds will be E/SE 6-14mph.

Tonight, the warm front moves through the region but the rain threat remains very low. Only the U.P. has the “best” chance for a shower, but even *that is not looking too promising. Lows will be in the middle/upper 30′s and lower 40′s. Winds will be SE 5-13mph.

Mostly sunny skies take over by late Wednesday a.m. into the p.m. hours. This will allow the mercury to jump into the 60′s and lower 70′s. Winds will be S/SE 8-18mph.

A few showers and thundershowers are possible Thursday. Highs will once again be in the 60′s to even some lower 70′s south.

It will be cooler on Friday with partly cloudy skies. There is a slight shower chance as highs will only get into upper 40′s north and lower/middle 50′s south.

Frost and freeze conditions are possible Friday night and Saturday night with lows in the 20′s. Some areas could get into the teens.

An isolated shower is possible in the N/NE areas Saturday otherwise variably cloudy skies are expected. Highs should be in the middle/upper 40′s north and lower/middle 50′s south.

Dry conditions are on tap for Sunday with highs in the 50′s and lower 60′s.

Looking Really Dry This Week

March 29th, 2010 Dylan No comments

This weeks dry weather will continue to create concern over the drought conditions and fire danger across the area. We could see fire danger get into the extreme category Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday with Red Flag Warnings possible.

Here is the link to see if Burning Permits are being issued in your county:

http://www.dnr.state.mi.us/burnpermits/

————————————————

Slightly cooler air aloft this morning created some extra cloudiness in spots. The clouds will continue to dissipate and we are looking at mostly sunny skies in many areas by mid to late afternoon. Highs will be well into the 40′s with a few areas in the lower 50′s. Winds will be NE 5-15mph.

Tonight, clear skies will prevail with lows in the 20′s. Winds will be light SE.

Sunny skies return in full-force Tuesday. Highs should bounce back up into the 50′s with some lower 60′s. Winds will be S/SE 5-12mph.

More sunshine is on tap for Wednesday and Thursday. Highs on Wednesday should get back into the 60′s with a few lower 70′s possible. It will be warmer on Thursday as the mercury soars well into the 60′s and many areas into the 70′s. It will be windy Thursday with winds SW 12-22mph and gusty.

Brisk winds will continue Friday with more sunshine and highs similar to Thursday’s temps. Winds once again will be SW 12-22mph.

Conditions Thursday and Friday could very well create extreme fire danger along with Red Flag Warnings.

Some computer models are now putting in a chance for (much needed) showers for later Saturday and early Sunday.

The last time we saw highs in the mid 70′s was in mid-September of last year.

Record Warmth

March 15th, 2010 Dylan No comments

With much of the snowpack gone now and the Mid-March sun doing its thing, we are looking at more record high temperatures today (and the next several especially in the U.P.!)

Lets take a look at Sault Ste Marie and the warmth we have seen here.

(Date……….New Record…………Old Record)

March 9…….55 degrees…………49 degrees (2000)
March 11…..50 degrees…………47 degrees (2007)
March 13…..62 degrees…………58 degrees (1995)
Today………???????????…………52 degrees (1990)

Much of the E.U.P. could see record highs through Thursday with current records are in the middle to upper 50′s.

—————————————

Also, for the first 14 days of March, here are the Daily Departures from Normal using daytime highs and overnight low temperatures.

SS Marie………..+15.5 degrees above normal
Gaylord…………+8.5 degrees above normal
Traverse City….+7.8 degrees above normal
Houghton Lake…+8.s degrees above normal

Plus, outside the heavy rain most areas saw late last week south of M-115, most areas are looking quite dry adding to the drought conditions and increasing fire danger.

—————————————

For the rest of today, we will see gradual clearing from north to south. The warmest temps today will be where the sunshine breaks out first and stays around the longest. Readings will be in the 50′s and lower 60′s. Winds will be N 7-15mph.

Tonight, clear skies are expected with lows in the middle/upper 20′s and lower 30′s. Winds will be Light/North.

More sunshine is on tap for Tuesday and Wednesday with highs in the 50′s and a few around 60. The coolest readings, of course, will be near the Great Lakes.

Some extra cloudiness is expected for Thursday but we are still looking mild.

Rain chances increase a bit for Friday and Saturday then it could turn cold enough for a rain/snow mix or all snow Sunday into Monday. Stay tuned!

Watching Storm At End Of The Week

March 14th, 2010 Dylan No comments

The U.P. and the Tip of the Mitt saw some sunshine Sunday which allowed temperatures to warm up quite a bit while areas farther south saw the clouds stick around and even some patchy drizzle occurred, keeping temperatures down quite a bit. Some 4p.m. temperatures with sunshine:

SS Marie 60
Newberry 59
Kinross 54
Pellston 52

Winds off Lake Huron kept these areas colder:

Cheboygan 46
Rogers City 45
Alpena 45

Clouds and some drizzle:

Gaylord 42
Grayling 41
Traverse City 48
Cadillac 41
Houghton Lake 41
Midland 39 (winds off Saginaw Bay!)

Temperatures along Lake Michigan shoreline were in the 50′s with down sloping E/NE winds warming us up a bit here along with a little bit of sunshine.

ALL areas will see plenty of sunshine Monday (some early morning cloudiness/drizzle in our central cloudiness possible) with the mercury soaring back into the 50′s and lower 60′s. Winds will be N 7-15mph so areas along the immediate Lake Superior, Lake Michigan and Lake Huron shorelines will be cooler. Morning temperatures should be in the upper 20′s to lower 30′s north and lower to middle 30′s south.

High pressure will remain in control through at least late Wednesday night and Thursday giving us mostly clear conditions and mild temperatures. Remember this, normal daytime highs are in the middle/upper 30′s north and lower 40′s south this week….so we will be well above normal! Highs should be in the 50′s with a few lower 60′s possible (and of course, cooler near the Great Lakes).

We are watching a system for next weekend that could give us some showers and thunderstorms Saturday/Saturday night and a mix Sunday a.m. then snow showers Sunday afternoon.

Just a reminder, the heaviest rainfall the past few days was mainly along and south of M-115. The U.P. and areas NE of M-115 have not seen much moisture (rain the past few days, and snow this winter) so fire danger will increase this week with the dry weather expected. I talked to Carol Nilsson from the USFS Saturday and she indicated that the Huron National Forest is looking to be especially dry. If you plan on burning, it is wise to contact your local DNRE, USFS or local fire department regarding burn permits. Here is a link regarding burn permit information.

Much Needed Light Rain Coming

March 9th, 2010 Dylan No comments

An area of low pressure in Kansas will slowly move E/NE the next several days and be centered over western Pennsylvania by early Sunday.

This track will give us plenty of cloudiness along with the threat for off and on light rain/drizzle. So after a few days of mostly sunny and dry weather, things are going to get gray and damp.

The clouds will thicken up from SW to NE tonight with still some fog possible. Some drizzle and light rain is possible mostly south of M-115. Lows will be in the upper 20′s and lower 30′s N/NE to the lower to middle 30′s SW. Winds will be E/SE 5-10.

Mostly overcast skies are on tap for Wednesday with patchy light rain and drizzle still in the forecast. By the afternoon, it looks like the best chance for rain will be in the north. Highs will be in the lower to middle 40′s north and middle/upper 40′s to lower 50′s south. Winds will be E/SE 8-18.

Thursday will be interesting due to the fact that the computer models are indicating a mostly dry day with some filtered sunshine. However, with the storm system close enough to the area, we still could see some drizzle or some light rain. If we do see some sunshine, however, temperatures could soar into the 50′s. If we stay cloudy and drizzly, we could remain in the 40′s. Stay tuned!

Friday through Sunday is looking cloudy and damp with a continued chance for rain showers.
