The lake effect machine (get used to that term for the next, what, 4 months!) will continue to crank out some heavy snowfall in the prime snowbelt areas.

Through this afternoon we are looking at winds mostly W to slightly W/NW putting some very heavy snow down in NW Chippewa and Northern Luce Counties and in many areas in Northern and Western Lower Michigan.

We just do not have a few distinct snowbands like we usually do. Look at the radar loop here and you will see several bands coming off of Lake Superior and Lake Michigan. As a matter of fact, you can see the Lake Superior connection that is going on in giving the Tip of the Mitt and NE lower Michigan some heavy banding.

And the wind speeds (along with the wind direction) are perfect to push the snowbands well inland and even to the Lake Huron shoreline!

With the temperatures holding in the teens in most areas and the brisk winds at 10-20mph and gusty, wind chills will be at or below zero at times for the rest of today.

Same old story tonight with the wind speed and direction not changing a whole lot. Lows will be in the single digits well inland where we will see some clearing. Temps will hold in the 9-15 range near Lake Michigan and Lake Superior.

In all reality now, Friday is shaping up to be similar to today. Wind directions will not change much, as well as the wind speeds.

Saturday is actually looking “milder” with highs in the 20′s north and maybe a few areas around 30 south. Winds will be S 10-20mph putting a chilly back in the air for sure.

A weak system will push on through Sunday giving us a chance for some light snow. Highs well into the 20′s and some lower 30′s.

Some additional light snow is on tap for Monday then more frigid air takes aim on us for Tuesday and Wednesday of next week…..and that means more serious lake effect snows to deal with.
